Tips For Training Your Betta Our Way

First, choose a plakat fighter from a reputable breeder who has a history of producing winning bloodlines. Fighting bettas are at their best when they are around 8-9 months old. They will remain in peak condition for about 1 month with proper training. After this time, you will need to get a new betta and condition him to continue winning. The reason for this is because after several battles, the betta’s teeth will become dull and he will not have victories in the arena anymore.

Characteristics To Look For When Choosing A Champion Fighter

The eyes should be clear and bright.
The body should be thick and stout but not too fat, especially the peduncle area (at base of tail).
The scales should be very shiny and tightly sorted.
The gills should be large and of equal size on both sides.
The mouth should be wide, thick and tightly shut.
The ventral fins should be long and straight.
The tail fin should be large.
The body should have a nice comportment and good symmetry overall.
Finally, try to choose a male that makes very large and thick bubble nests as this is a good sign.

Actual Training Method

1. After choosing your champion fighter, keep him in water with Indian almond leaf for 8-10 days to       condition and harden his scales. The water should have the appearance of red or black tea.

2. Then, while training, transfer the selected male to clear water for better viewing and gently stir          the water to make some current for him to swim against to build strength and endurance. Do not        over do it! Do this for a couple of hours for 3 consecutive days. Return him to the Indian almond          leaf water when not training.

3. After the first 3 days of training, you should again transfer the male to clear water for the next 2-     3 days and introduce a few small females for him to chase. Do this early in the morning and                 evening for 1-2 hours. Return to Indian almond leaf water when finished.

4. Let him rest for a couple of days and then introduce another female until he attacks and bites.           Once he exhibits this behavior, remove the female and he is ready for the arena.

Final Notes

Be sure to feed high quality food to your fighters during training but do not overfeed. You do not want to cause excess fat. Also, one other technique you may wish to try is called “banting.” To do this, place two males in a bowl with very shallow water, so shallow that they cannot swim. They will attempt to fight, but the shallow water will cause some resistance and this is believed to increase strength. If you do this, only do it for 5 minutes at a time and only once a day during the training schedule.
